Q&A with Jason McClure, General Manager of Cedar Point

Sports Force Parks at Cedar Point Sports Center’s unique location in Sandusky, Ohio places it right around the corner from Cedar Point, a 364-acre amusement park on the shores of Lake Erie. We talked to Jason McClure, General Manager of Cedar Point to tell you all about what’s new at the park and the special benefits teams will receive when visiting.

Cedar Point is known as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World. So how many roller coasters does the park have, exactly?

We have 17 roller coasters and a total of 70 rides - no park has as many rides as we do. We’re really proud of the legacy we have of introducing record-breaking roller coasters: we had the first 200, 300 and 400 foot coasters in the world. And Valravn, our newest roller coaster is the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster in the world.

What’s new at Cedar Point this year?

There are always new things to do at Cedar Point and this year it’s Cedar Point Shores – our expanded and totally refreshed water park. There’s a brand new children’s area with two attractions, and a new slide tower called Point Plummet. You’re in a capsule where the floor drops from underneath you leading into lots of twists and turns. Thrill seekers are going to love it.

What are the benefits that Sports Force Parks tournament guests get when they visit Cedar Point?

Tournament participants get free entry to Cedar Point and Cedar Point Shores for the length of their stay in Sandusky (either a five-day ticket for a three-day tournament or an eight-day ticket for a weeklong tournament)! Another great benefit is the flexibility of these tickets; you can arrive early to enjoy the park before and during the tournament, or enjoy the park during the tournament and stay after to extend the fun. Other than our season passholders, no one gets the kind of flexibility that Sports Force Parks tournament guests get.

What’s an attraction at Cedar Point that you’ve found people enjoy whether it’s their first trip to the park, or have been many times?

I always point back to Cedar Point and Lake Erie Railroad – even the thrill seekers like it because the whole family can ride it, and the track has a beautiful view of Lake Erie. It gives you a chance to relax and catch your breath in between the bigger rides. And It’s one of the few coal-powered trains left in the world, so you definitely get a sense of nostalgia when you’re on it.

What are some tips to help visitors make the most of their time at Cedar Point?

There are definitely ways to reduce wait times on our most popular roller coasters. You’re better off waiting to ride Millennium Force and Valravn later in the day. Due to their location towards the front of the park, guests tend to ride those first. And mid-day to early evening, Maverick has the longest line, so head to the back of the park first thing and ride it early.
